If you have been thinking about starting therapy in Delhi but keep putting it off because you are unsure what it will cost, you are not alone. The question "how much does therapy cost?" is one of the most commonly searched mental health queries in India — and one of the least honestly answered.

Most clinics do not publish their fees. That silence can feel discouraging. It can make therapy seem like something out of reach, when for many people it is far more affordable than they expect.

At Vriddhi Centre for Mental Health in Dwarka, we believe transparency is part of good care. So here is a straightforward, honest breakdown of what therapy costs in Delhi in 2025 — what you are paying for, why fees vary, and how to find support that fits your budget.

What Is the Average Cost of Therapy in Delhi?

Therapy fees in Delhi vary quite a bit depending on the type of professional you see, where they are located, and whether you attend in person or online.

Here is a general range to give you a realistic picture:

Psychiatrist consultation (medication + mental health evaluation): ₹800 – ₹2,500 per session for a new consultation. Follow-up visits are typically shorter and less expensive, usually ₹500 – ₹1,500.

Clinical psychologist (therapy sessions): ₹1,000 – ₹3,000 per session, depending on the psychologist's experience and qualifications. An RCI-licensed clinical psychologist — the gold standard for psychological practice in India — may charge toward the higher end of this range.

Counselling psychologist: ₹700 – ₹2,000 per session. Counselling psychologists are well-suited for stress, relationship concerns, grief, career issues, and life transitions.

Online therapy: ₹600 – ₹2,000 per session. Online sessions with qualified therapists are often slightly more affordable and remove the cost and effort of travel, which matters if you live outside Dwarka or in a far part of Delhi NCR.

These are averages. Fees at large hospital chains in South Delhi or premium wellness centres in areas like Vasant Kunj or Saket are typically higher — sometimes ₹3,000 – ₹6,000 per session or more. Community mental health centres and NGO-linked clinics may offer subsidised rates.

Why Do Therapy Fees Vary So Much?

It is worth understanding what goes into a therapist's fee, because the range can feel confusing.

Qualifications and training matter. A psychiatrist has completed an MBBS plus an MD in psychiatry — roughly 10–13 years of medical training. A clinical psychologist holds an M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology from an RCI-recognised institution. Both represent significant professional investment. Higher qualifications generally mean higher fees — and more specialised care.

Experience. A therapist with 10 years of practice and expertise in a specific area — say, trauma, OCD, or child development — will typically charge more than a newly qualified therapist. Both can provide excellent care, but for complex or long-standing difficulties, more experienced clinicians often deliver faster results.

Type of therapy. Some approaches, like psychological assessments for ADHD or autism, involve multiple sessions and detailed reports. These naturally cost more than a single counselling session. Specialised therapies like DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) or ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD) require specific training and take more preparation per session.

Location and overhead. A clinic in a prime South Delhi location has higher rent than one in Dwarka — and those costs are reflected in fees. This is one reason why quality mental health care in West Delhi, including Dwarka, Janakpuri, and Uttam Nagar, is often better value without any drop in clinical quality.

Online vs in-person. Online therapy removes venue costs and is often slightly cheaper. It is also clinically effective for most conditions, according to a strong body of research.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

This is a fair question, and one that directly affects the total cost.

The honest answer is: it depends.

For someone dealing with a specific, recent stressor — a job loss, a breakup, adjusting to a new city — a short course of 6–10 sessions may be enough to build coping skills and feel better.

For longer-standing difficulties — chronic anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, ADHD, relationship patterns — therapy often takes longer. Many people find that 3–6 months of weekly sessions brings meaningful change. Some continue beyond that, not because they are "not getting better," but because they find ongoing support valuable.

A good therapist will always give you their honest view on how long treatment might take, and revisit that with you as you go. At Vriddhi, we discuss this openly from the first session.

Is Therapy Covered by Health Insurance in India?

This is improving, slowly. Mental health coverage under health insurance became a legal requirement in India following the Mental Healthcare Act of 2017, which mandated that insurers treat mental illness on par with physical illness.

In practice, coverage varies widely. Some policies cover psychiatric consultations and hospitalisation for acute mental health episodes. Outpatient therapy sessions (the regular weekly sessions most people need) are less consistently covered, though some policies do include them.

It is worth calling your insurer and asking specifically: "Do you cover outpatient psychiatric consultations and therapy sessions?" Keep a record of their response.

Corporate health plans sometimes offer an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) that includes a limited number of free or subsidised counselling sessions. If your employer offers this, it is worth using.

What Does Vriddhi Charge?

We keep our fees accessible because we believe that quality mental health care should not be limited to a small section of Delhi.

Our team includes a psychiatrist, RCI-licensed clinical psychologists, and trained counselling psychologists — so you are seeing qualified professionals at each level of care, not just one type of clinician.

We offer both in-person sessions at our clinic in Sector 6, Dwarka and online consultations for those who prefer to see us from home.

If you are unsure which type of clinician you need — psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, or counsellor — we can help you figure that out before you book. Take our free mental health test to get a sense of where to start, or simply call us and we will guide you.

Does the Cost of Therapy Mean Better Care?

Not necessarily. A ₹5,000 session at a premium private clinic is not automatically better than a ₹1,200 session at a well-run community clinic. What matters far more is the clinician's training, their experience with your specific concern, and whether you feel safe and heard in the room.

Before choosing a therapist, it is reasonable to ask:

  • What are your qualifications? Are you RCI-registered (for psychologists) or MCI/NMC-registered (for psychiatrists)?

  • Do you have experience treating [your specific concern]?

  • What approach do you use, and why?

  • How will we know if the therapy is working?

A confident, ethical clinician will welcome these questions. If you feel rushed or dismissed when you ask them, that itself is useful information.

The Real Cost of Not Getting Help

This part often goes unsaid, so we want to say it.

Untreated anxiety and depression have real costs — in lost work productivity, strained relationships, disrupted sleep, physical health consequences, and quality of life. Many people spend years managing symptoms on their own, often with great effort and limited success, before seeking professional help.

The upfront cost of therapy is real. So is the cost of not going.

If budget is a genuine barrier, please do speak to us. We will not be able to offer free care, but we can have an honest conversation about what is possible.
